Pathfinder gives a lot of love to the Core classes and quite a bit of flexibility which is only increased by the other supplemental books. The Pathfinder rules are fairly simple at their core, and I'm not going to try to explain them to non-gamers because, well, that's what this book is for, innit? Some of it comes through in the rulebooks, but there's more in a few novels and comic series, too.

Fortunately, there's the Beginner's Box and the Strategy Guide now, but when this first came out, it wasn't necessarily the best entry point.
